  1. I think Glenda is right. In the speech of those from the deep south, it is a pronunciation of “directly”, and means, “right away”, “immediately”, “without delay”. Faulkner uses the word.

    1. It’s possible that’s what it is. I read that word in Their Eyes Were Watching God, actually. I think the way it was used in that book I thought they were using it as an adjective, but there wasn’t any explanation of the words in the book in our class so I had to decipher it myself.

Since 2 people said that’s what it means ill change it. Thanks ya’ll tereckly.

  2. In South Georgia it does translate as directly, but not right this minute, indicates a short delay

  3. The word means you plan to do something but not right now, a little later , 67 yrs in S GA and Fl

  4. My Grandmother, from South Georgia, who was born in 1884, used it, and was uses as “Anonymous” stated, “The word means you plan to do something but not right now, a little later”.
